GEORGE CAMPBELL LEISURE CENTRE, March, Cambridgeshire.

Summer 2007 journal

Today we took a trip into March to the George Campbell Leisure Centre and, while I sketched, my Mum took a dip with her Grandsons.

I've sketched people almost everywhere, cafe's, shops, parks and I thought those sketches were challenging but a pool full of crazy kids letting off steam in moving water provided some brand new difficulties. I had just seconds to capture the essence of the moment before my Sons, the perspective and the light moved again changing everything completely!

That's quite a challenge to take on, but you've really pulled it off! I've never dared tried sketching at the pool, partly for the reasons you mention and partly because I'm afraid people will think it's a bit pervy... am I too sensitive?

It is a challenge to capture people in the water. They move even more than normal, and then you're tempted to start over. Nice job on both of these.

Good for you...drawing at the pool. Something about this location in particular paralyses me. I think it has to do with all the movement, as you describe.

Great job capturing the action.

No I don't think you're too sensitive Dave, people have a right to be worried about strangers paying their children attention, sad but true!
I considered these facts before sketching and took these precautions:
I sketched only MY children.
I sketched openly, with my sketchbook in full view and my watercolour box open on the table beside me so everyone could see exactly what I was doing...Showing I had nothing to hide!

I do think men have it harder than women in this situation, for some reason they hold more of a threat in parents minds. EG. My boys have been chatting to the old lady down the drove for many years, popping in when they walk the animals to collect victoria sponges she has baked for them or to just make sure she is well, if I am honest, I'm not sure I would have felt so comfortable if that sweet old lady had have been a sweet old man paying my children so much attention...at least I think it would have taken much longer for 'him' to earn my trust.

Thanks Joan. You're not wrong, these were SUPERfast sketches. When it came to adding the colour I had to keep waiting for them to take a similar pose in the water to get an idea of muscle placement and values.
A very tricky exercise!

Thanks Suzanne!
Yep, movement was a problem and if you stare at it for too long you kindda feel a little sea sick! LOL!

It's not easy to capture the movement of the water, but you done it most excellently. Very lovely sketches.

Thankyou Lynn!

Great sketches, Anita. It is very difficult to sketch people in motion, but I think you've done a great job of it. I'm still trying to master that challenge after I got a taste of it at the table tennis place a couple of weeks ago.
