DENNY ABBEY AND FARMLAND MUSEUM, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. UK

Summer 2007 journal

Today Harry and I visited Denny Abbey and The Farmland Museum in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. We managed to have a good look around at everything before the rain set in when we made our way to the cafe for a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake.

The atmosphere was very welcoming and all of the displays/exhibits were tactile and child friendly They have a large model of a cow that's filled with water that the children can practice milking on, numerous activities among the museum collections and a playhouse with dressing up clothes and plastic vegetables.

Walnut Tree Cottage was so quaint with just 2 up and 3 down, the rooms were very small and basic and it was amazing to see how much work went into a weekly clothes wash or making a meal. The kitchen utensils were limited as was space and worktop, yet these people would have baked their own bread, made their own cream and butter and largely survived on produce from their land. Most people now have kitchens at least three times the size, utensils and gadgets coming out of their ears, food delivered by some supermarket or another and take-away at least once a week.
Certainly food for thought!

You seem to really be going places! The farmland museum sounds like a place a young boy would love. I like the fireplace...and that yummy cake.

Sounds like a wonderful day - rain is a great excuse for having a treat and a cup of tea. You have a great gift for communicating the atmosphere of a place. I always enjoy a visit to your blog.
