OLD HUNSTANTON, Norfolk. UK

Old Hunstanton-28 March '07 - large watercolour moleskin

...By afternoon the sun was dancing over the beach at Old Hunstanton, creating small clouds of mist as it dried the sand. Diane, Joan and Myself finished up our chips and, once again, grabbed our sketchbooks.

I love Old Hunstanton beach, the sand is plentiful and so soft, the atmosphere quieter and more peaceful than the Town beach. I wrote of a BBQ my family had at Old Hunstanton beach in my blog last year entitled "Bangers on the Beach".

The beach hut in my sketch was displaying a 'For Sale' sign and all three of us spent a while discussing how fabulous it would be to own it and spend our days sketching along the Norfolk coastline...Ah dreams!

I managed another quick sketch in my new watercolour moleskin before leaving, happy in the knowledge I would return many times again throughout the summer!

I love the colors you used. So beautiful! And your sketch of the beach hut is wonderful. Small cottages and little huts like that really appeal to me. On our coasts, too many hotels and giant beach houses have crowded out the old, quaint beach cottages that used to be there. Oh, the good ol' days! Thanks for sharing your day with us.

Who hasn't dreamt at some time of owning one of those cute beach huts? Unfortunately, Oxford is just too far from the sea! Not that I could afford it anyway...Still, if you were sitting in it, you couldn't sketch it, could you? Is the top sketch done with watercolour pencils?

What a grand adventure of a day. I wish I could come along but hearing about it is almost as good, well not really but I can dream can't I? Wonderful sketches.

The beach hut drawing is standout! You have such a steady hand, and seem to capture just the right amount of detail.

I agree, the colours on the beach are gorgeous. I love the sketch of the little beach hut - What fun it would be to do one up - that's about the size renovation I can cope with LOL.

Great job on the perspective. I, too, have fantasies of a little house on the beach (that is, until hurricane season rolls around again here on the Gulf Coast of the USA). This place looks too serene to have those kind of worries.

Fabulous use of color, and the details are perfect. The little house s on the beach are really well done.

Lovely sketches! I really like your use of color; it captures the seaside so well.

These sketches and paintings really capture the feel of the place (I know it as we've been there). I particularly like the sketch of the hut.

Thankyou Phthaloblu, pleased you liked the seascape, it was a bit of an experiment.

How true Dave!
My friend Diane rang to see how much this little hut was to purchase...over £5,000 can you believe. I looked some up on the internet and am astonished to learn that this price tag is fairly cheap as far as beach huts go, I came across one for £35,000!
Unbelievable!
Top sketch has watercolour pencils, watercolour, oil pastel, pen & coloured pencils in it...Bit of a mixtured experiment!

Thankyou Robyn!
Some of the huts are pretty basic and some are just gorgeous like this one. I sense you are a gal' after my own heart...what you could do with one of these.....oh to dream!

Thanks Kay!
Actually we were talking to a woman that owns a hut at Heacham and she was telling us of the trauma of a recent high tide. It appears the Norfolk coast is no different to any other, it has it's calms and it's nightmares.
Let's hope this week is VERY calm!
LOL!

Thankyou Martha. Reading through feedback is so useful, I am glad you enjoyed my palette.

Oh Carole (I guess you've heard the Neil Sedaka line before right? LOL!) Thankyou!
It's wonderful to read that you think I caught the 'feel' of the place, I think that capturing the character of a subject be it a portrait or a scene is what gives a piece that little bit extra. I am delighted that you feel I managed it.

Well done Anita
I recognised the hut in the sketch instantly. I own a hut, a few yards from the one you have drawn. I also like the harder to do, colour sketch of the beach to the front of the Dunes. I am a professional Illustrator, and could'nt have done any better. Glad you like the spot, its my retreat, and I like it all, just the way it is. Paticularly in the evenings when most everyone else has gone home. Walking with my family, and young Beagle, who tries everything to avoid the areas of shallow water, we cross, when the sea has retreated. The hut you sketched is still for sale.

Chris how lovely of you to leave your kind words and how lucky you are to own one of those adorable huts!
I can't believe the hut is still for sale, I could quite easily live in it...forever!
Enjoy your retreat.
