HEACHAM BEACH, Norfolk. UK

Heacham Beach Huts - 28 March '07 - large watercolour moleskin

On Wednesday, our good friend Diane was able to join Joan and I for our weekly sketch day and, with the promise of good weather, I knew just where to take them...The seaside!

We drove towards the Norfolk coast through dense fog, mist and eventually sunshine, arriving at Heacham just before 11am.

Our first stop, Heacham beach, was spent sipping on the contents of our flasks and shivering from the chilly sea breeze while trying to sketch. The fog hung over the sea and turned the beach into a curtain of grey, so I turned to sketch a few of the many beach huts.
This was my first time using the watercolour moleskin, I used pen and watercolour pencils.

Around midday we headed off to pick up some much needed fish and chips from Hunstanton Town before moving on to Old Hunstanton to sketch some more...

I went to the lavender farm there once...don't suppose this is the optimal time of year for a visit, though! What did you think of the watercolour moleskine? Nice sketches...very atmospheric.

What did you reckon to the watercolour moley? I've heard not-so-good things about it, but it's a lovely little sketch you've done.

I have no idea why I didn't get on with watercolour pencils for years! I am finding more and more that they're an ideal sketching medium.

Thankyou!
The lavender farm is amazing but you are quite right Dave, not at it's best just yet!

Thanx E-J!
I agree, I love the watercolour pencils for my sketchbooks, especially my moleskin sketchbook.
The watercolour moleskin...Hmmm...I'm not decided yet. On this sketch, my first, I found the paper stained easily and found the landscape format a little clumsy to hold and a tad restricting...I put it down to it being new.
It was not as I expected, although I'm not sure what that was exactly. I can't seem to put my finger on it but my first reaction was an undescribable "not sure about this"
I'm sure, in time, I'll find a technique that will enable me to feel more comfortable with it.

These little beach huts have made a lovely sketch, Anita. What fun, three artists - that's a sketchcrawl. And hot fish and chips on a cold foggy day - bliss!

I was disappointed with my watercolour moleskine for watercolours - thought I would try it with watercolour pencils next. I'll probably come to love it. Looks cute but very difficult to prop up to photograph in portrait format.

It was a wonderful day Robyn. I have invited Joan and Diane to stay with me tomorrow night, so I shall be spending all day tomorrow and Sunday along the Norfolk coast doing much the same as we did Wednesday....Bliss indeed!

I felt much the same about the watercolour moleskin, I unwrapped it with such excitement and remember feeling a little deflated with how it handled it's righful medium. I shall plod on, experimenting and finding a way to make it work to my advantage. We can't let a piece of paper beat us can we! ;)
